Who, What, Why of Coast to Coast
Childhood Cancer
Cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death of children in Canada
- More children die of cancer each year than asthma, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, congenital anomalies and pediatric AIDS combined.
- One in every 400 young adults IS a childhood cancer survivor.
- In Canada, about 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, one in every 330 kids.
- Over 10,000 children are living with some aspect of cancer or its long-term effects
- The treatment and cure for these children is a 24/7 process, often over a period of 2-3 years, the effects of which can smother childhood
- With childhood cancer representing only 2% of the cancer epidemic in Canada, this area of research and care is under-supported.
Who is CTCACF and What Do We Do?
-
A national charitable organization that focuses solely on childhood cancer fundraising.
-
We focus on creating fundraising events that drive wellness, physical activity and an healthy, active lifestyle.
-
volunteerism, corporate sponsors and registration fees cover all Foundation and fundraising event expenses.
-
As a result, 100% of receiptable donations we receive are distributed to the childhood cancer charities that we support.
-
Over $14 million distributed to kids cancer charities since 2003; over $4,700,000 in 2010 alone up 40% from 2009
Distribution of Funds:
Donations raised through Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation (CTCACF) events are distributed through a strict governance process developed with key members of the cancer community.
Donations are disbursed to both local and national childhood cancer programs such as:
- Essential clinical trial programs and Canadian-wide standards of care in a joint effort with the council representing the 17 pediatric oncology centers (C-17) and the associated Hospital Foundations
- Support programs for families whose financial resources have been drained by the impact of the long-term care of a child with cancer
- Childhood oncology camping and year round support standards for kids impacted by cancer (including isolated rural areas)
- Scholarships, Tutoring and Educational assistance for childhood cancer survivors
- Teen programs to promote leadership and life skills
Our Goal
To make a meaningful difference in the survival rate and quality of life of Canadian children living with and beyond cancer.
“50 years ago less than 10% of childhood patients could be cured, thanks to research, today more than 75% of children diagnosed with cancer become long term survivors. Let’s not stop until 100% of those children can be cured…..Ride for the kids who are battling cancer now. Ride for those who will be diagnosed in the future; and Ride for me, until I can ride with you.” — Josh Nelson, Survivor
